Upgrading a 7800N to 1.06h?

Post by dma5m561 »

Hello all, from a brand-new user of a 7800N that I've just installed to replace a Draytek 2710N that worked OK-ish but seemed to have some flaky and mildly irritating firmware bugs. By contrast my newly-acquired 7800N seems to be rock-solid but it's only been in operation for 24hrs so perhaps it's a bit early to be so confident! I'm running bog-standard ADSL2+, with Demon as my ISP. The downstream ADSL sync rate is a steady 19.4Mbps and upstream is 1.16Mbps (both with zero errors), the SNR margins are both 6dB and the downstream attenuation is showing as 8.5dB (I'm <500m from my local exchange!).

The 7800N was supplied by firmware version 1.06g installed; I've downloaded 1.06h but haven't yet installed it primarily because the advice seems to be to revert to the factory default settings after installing 1.06h. I don't want to do this and then have to spend an hour or more re-entering all the IP and MAC addresses in the DHCP 'Fixed Host' table and also re-entering all the wireless clients' MAC addresses in the Wireless MAC Filtering table. Entering the ISP hostname, password and other details won't be a chore compared with the aforementioned.

Is there any specific reason why the 1.06h firmware can't be installed and the router then restarted using the 'Current Settings' option rather than the Factory Default Settings? Has anyone experienced any issues after doing the upgrade and then restarting using the current settings?

Also, is there any advantage to be gained by upgrading from 1.06g to 1.06h, or should I wait for the next upgrade version to come along?!

Thanks in advance,

When I upgraded mine I first backed up my settings & then applied the firmware update using existing settings.

From what I recall - it was a while age & I'm old :) - there weren't any issues with that.

First though make sure you get a a copy of the 1.06g firmware in case you need to go back to that , along with your saved config file.
