DHCP / ARP - 7800

Post by evansj57 »

I have the following setup: 7800 modem/router connected to a desktop PC, Canon networked printer, Raspberry Pi and Apple Airport Extreme.

After much confusion, I finally succeeded in setting static IPs for the above hosts.

My confusion was caused by the Status/DHCP Table inconsistently showing data on DHCP hosts. At times, Status/DHCP Table just did not want to show ANY data for the hosts. After I restarted the router, it showed only one host, my desktop computer. Then after a few minutes, the DHCP table was empty again !!! I ended up using network scanning software on my PC to identify the hosts that were connected and their IP & MAC addresses. I then used these data to set up the static IP addresses.

But having done that, now the DHCP table seems to be showing all the host information again! Not sure why, any ideas?

Anyway, I have some questions:
1) The static hosts are shown in the ARP table but not the DHCP table. I guess this is normal behaviour and the DHCP table only shows data for hosts that get their IP from the DHCP pool?
2) But some DHCP hosts appear both in the DHCP table and the ARP table. What is the rational for some hosts appearing in the either / both the ARP table and DHCP table?
3) Finally, the networked printer and Airport Extreme, which now have static IPs, do not show up in the ARP table, although they are connected and working and I can see them with the network scanning software. Why would that be?

It would be nice if the ARP table showed the host names like the DHCP table. It would also be helpful to have one table which shows all (and recently) connected hosts and their MAC, IP and host name.

Its a known bug. New beta firmware was brought out some time ago but it hasn't been updated for quite awhile.
