Monitoring Internet Speed

Hello all,

Earlier today I had a slowdown of my connection from approx 15mb/s to 5mb/s sometimes dropping down to under 2mb/s with my laptop being the only device connected to my 7800N. Now, I've had a look around for something which would allow me to monitor what comes in from the line (ISP) into my network rather than checking from my laptop which when there are other devices connected or I don't notice an application using a substantial amount of data is not the most accurate.

From what I've seen there are two options being from the router or using software from a device on the network, my preference would be from the router as anything from a connected device would not be as accurate as that due to the above reasons unless I am mistaken. However, from what I have seen the 7800N does not or does not obviously provide a service to do this so would like further suggestions, corrections and advice on what I could do.

When you get those sort of drops with only one device connected, then it's best to contact your ISP who will probably do a line check and may ask you to perform speed tests throughout the day to see if they occur at a particular time of day.

The speed drop you refer to is it connection speed (from the 7800N) or download speed (via a speedtest site) and are you wired or wirelessly connected?

Those figures are from a speed test site being from speedtest.net. I could visibly notice that it had dropped and with no other device connected as well as the resource monitor showing little usage of data from any applications I may be running so automatically assumed that it would be close to the actual connection speed but not entirely accurate. Hence the question for ideas on getting actual connection speeds to be able to more authoritatively tell my ISP that it is way below my average rather than have them tell me that it's not a problem from their side and not be able to say anything against it.

It would of been wired, when running at its usual speeds a wired connection would get me around 15mb/s and a wireless around 10mb/s however at that time both were running at similarly low speeds of usually under 5mb/s if not under 2mb/s.
