7800N not powering up

Post by samscam »

My trusty 7800N which I've had for a couple of years has just decided to brick itself.

The power and internet lights are lit *very* dimly, orange and green respectively.

I've tried:
• performing a reset with the reset button, nada
• various power supplies (tested them with a multimeter while I was at it)
• leaving it switched off for a bit and hoping

... all to no avail.

Any ideas anyone?

Try a emergency upgrade, attached is the procedure, use any firmware as the 'Software File'

Thanks for the reply billion_fan :)

Ok so I had another go following the emergency upgrade procedure and...

• Configured static ip on the a laptop and plugged into the EWAN port
• Held the reset button and powered on...

No lights... waited, holding the button, let go of the button...
Noticed that the EWAN port was "up" according to my laptop. Still no lights on the router mind.
Tried connecting to the web interface anyway, nothing.

Power cycled the router one more time and MIRACLE: lights illuminated and the whole thing came back up, retaining my configured settings.

So while this seems rather random especially as I had done pretty much the same thing yesterday, at least it worked. Will obvs post updates if it gives me further trouble. Wondering if it's worth re-flashing the firmware just to be on the safe side...

I would leave the unit as is, for now, as the unit is up and running, just monitor the issue

What would the software image from the ISP consist of as asking TalkTalk CS for anything other what is in their script is usually a dead loss.

The image it refers to is the firmware version

Right - no dice after all. The device stayed up for four hours and then died again. Repeating what I tried before hasn't worked. Given the intermittent nature of the problem I'm now suspecting a component failure inside the box. Options now are to crack it open (instructions anyone?) and test the components or dump it buy something new. I'd far rather extend its life than consign it to the tip if I can.

Meanwhile on the subject of firmware:

The pdf/interface may mention getting "an updated software image file from your ISP" but I think it's making the assumption that the router was supplied and supported by your ISP. Meanwhile I've been using the stock 1.06h firmware. This has been absolutely fine since first installed early last year.

Thanks billion_fan and samscan - was wondering if it just meant the 7800N's f/w in this case.

You could be right about the innards of the box, but something of the emergency upgrade must have fired up something for it to come back to life again.

Wonder if a reversion to 1.06g would help but I think there was a slight tweak to the 1.06h f/w to deal with a blank DHCP Table which billion_fan should be able to help you with as another f/w to try.
