Intermittant Wireless routing problem on new router setup.

Post by clashcityrocker »

Hi, I setup my 7800DXL router last week and automatically put the latest firmware on it. Since then, I am seeing reasonably frequent problems with Wifi routing. So far I have seen in on 4 devices (all Android phones/tablets), but that may be because they get the most use.

The symptoms:
  • No internet access for wireless clients.
What I know so far
  • Wireless IS connected and stable on the client devices, with decent signal strength.
  • Whilst the problem is there, I was able to log on to a linux server I have connected to the router via one of the wired LAN ports, and from that I WAS able to ping Google successfully.
  • Disabling and re-enabling the Wifi on the client devices always fixes the problem.
  • The router is showing that the WAN connection has been up since the router was setup.
My Configuration:

I have both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wifi bands enabled, both using default WPS/WPS2 encryption. I also have a Guest Wifi setup, which has wireless isolation, so guests can't access my LAN (I followed the "Guests can access my files!!??" post ).

I have two servers assigned static IP addresses (192.168.1.6 and 192.168.1.8), and my DHCP addresses are being assigned from 192.168.1.100 upwards on the main wifi accounts (and 192.168.2.1 upwards on the guest network).

Any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot this, next time it happens. Are there any known issues in this area?
Many thanks.

Can you try to conenct to the routers web gui from a wireless client when the issue occurs, I want to check to see if the wireless clients are still connected to the router

Update: not just wireless clients. Wired too. My ps4 was having same issues today. Router web interface was NOT accessible. The log file shows this:

I've never seen wired issues with the 7800DXL, so that is strange.

There must be something worng if you can't access the web gui, did you notice if the LAN light on the front of the router, turned off (the port the PS4 was connected too)

Can you try disabling the Group Isolation and see if the same issue occurs?

I think I will restore the router to default and run for a few weeks and see how it goes. If its still playing up, Amazon can have it back, as it will be no less trouble than my previously troublesome draytek 2820.

OK, got my tablet in the fault state, and it's permanently there, no internet connectivity, but LAN connectivity IS there.

I can access computers on my home LAN, I can access the route web interface (and the TELNET interface).

I have a full "dumpsysinfo" log. and wondering if this might help diagnose what's going on here. If you want me to post any values and snippets from it, please let me know. It's a very comprehensive log, and I think I have stripped out logon and password details, but would rather not post the whole lot for obvious reasons.

Here is something for starters:
(the client that has no internet is 192.168.1.108)

Forgot to mention, the wireless clients when they can't access the Internet are correctly listing the router IP address as the gateway.

I also tried to access Google via one of it's IP addresses (74.125.224.72), and this Didn't Work on the tablet with the problem (it did work from other tablet that was connected to the same router at the same time). I guess this rules out DNS problems, and I guess it also rules out internet issues, as one client was working, one not.

I have switched on the full debug logging, and I have a client that's still "offline" (and has been since last night), but I guess it's too late for that, I will need to disconnect and reconnect for it to sort itself out and then wait again.

if there are any other diagnostics you want me to run before I disconnect and reconnect the Wifi on it, let me know.

So seems network connectivity to the router is fine, its just to the internet that seems to be issue.

Have you tried different DNS servers?

I don't believe its a DNS issue because the working tablet could access google via its IP address and its domain name without problem. The non working one could not access either IP or domain name.
