7800N DSL died

Hi all,

After 2+ years using the 7800N which I bought used from ebay gave up the ghost today after a BT outage on their 20CN Network. The modem part of the router has failed, neither the DSL or Internet LEDs stay on apart from a quick single flash of the DSL LED.

Is this 7800N only good as a wired and wireless router now? Or can it be got working again?

Also would the 7800DXL be a good replacement for the 7800N as my town is getting FTTC soon.

You could try factory resetting it via the pin hole in the back of the router to see if it will resuscitate it, but leave it switched off for a couple of minutes with all cables disconnected first and all devices switched off.

Connect the cables back up, switch on and when it gets to as far as it's going to get (if not all of the way), then hold something like a straightened paperclip in the hole for about 15 secs until the lights go back out - and good luck !

Thanks for the things to try. Would the DSL LED still flash regardless of the phone being connected or not?

Not knowing what type of master socket you have as to whether you require microfilters or not - the broadband signal and phone signal are split, but a phone fault will disrupt broadband.

Can you still receive and make phone calls and is there any noise such as crackling or hissing when you just dial 0 before the auto voice kicks in ?

If you require microfilters, then trying a new one won't hurt - with or without the phone plugged in.

Was the outage due to BT shutting down 20CN in favour of the "new" 21CN in your area or was it just a general sort of fault ?

It would be ideal if you could borrow a router from a friend or relative to try as that could eliminate the 7800N, but try the power cycle and then the factory reset and see how you go.

Billion are bringing out a 8800NL on 19th May and later, a 8800 which could be more suitable - but with all new products, they can have their teething problems as you will see from the forum's posts for the other 7800 models.

Will still try and get the 7800N working again, if it doesn't, then I'll just use it as a wireless repeater.

That's what I call an expensive repair

If the lights come back on after you have done the factory reset on the 7800N, wire up and re-flash the firmware from the download that you should still have on your computer if you have kept up with the updates, or you could try restoring with a saved config if you have backed that up.

Did the factory reset earlier, that made the 7800N came back to life The price of the 7800DXL was about £90-odd, so I'll keep the 7800N as backup which I flashed to the 1.06h.dt2 firmware a few days prior to it playing dead

Glad to hear that the 7800N is back up and running.

The 8800NL is about £20 cheaper and while it has been described as an entry level VDSL router, don't know if the 7800DXL is of a higher spec for the price - but as long as you are happy
