Setting up 7800dxl with BT Infinity
Hello billion users.
Can anybody help me set up the 7800DXL to work with bt infinity ?
Just had infinity installed today and using the HH5 as supplied by BT, broadband wireless signals are ok but prefer to use the 7800DXL
How do i can connect ? Do i need to use both the HH5 and 7800DXL together to connect ? Or can i plug in the cable coming through the wall socket straight into the 7800DXL ?
Read through the various forums and it still isnt clear - to me anyways.
Quick start guide says " connect the ISP modem ( ie BT openreach modem/virgin superhub in modem** mode ( **?? ) to the EWAN ( ethernet WAN ) port of the router - So i connect the HH5 to the 7800DXL ?? if so do i use the WAN on the HH5 port to the WAN port on the 7800DXL ??
At the moment i have the wall socket and cable going into the DSL Broadband port on the HH5 - this remains as it is even though i am adding the 7800DXL ?
all help is appreciated - thanks

as the HH5 is a VDSL modem/router, you will have to connect the HH5 to the EWAN port on the 7800DXL, use any of the LAN ports from the HH5 to the EWAN port on the 7800DXL
Then run through the quick start, setting the WAN port to 'Ethernet' and 'Type' to 'IP Over Ethernet' and make sure the 'Obtain an IP address automatically' is ticked.
That should be it, then you can DMZ the WAN IP address the 7800DXL gets inside the HH5.
Also make sure both devices are using the same IP address eg 7800DXL uses 192.168.1.254 as default so the HH5 should use another IP address.

Thanks for reply, when you say run through the quick start - i assume on the billion Router and not the HH5?
The problem i am having is after i have connected from the LAN port on the HH5 to the Billion EWAN port, i am not seeing the billion login router page, i am only seeing the BT Home Hub settings page, this with laptop connected wired from ethernet laptop port to billion router ethernet port ?

Make sure they are not on the same IP address, then follow these stepsTrafford lad wrote:Hi Billion Fanbillion_fan wrote:How do i can connect ? Do i need to use both the HH5 and 7800DXL together to connect ? Or can i plug in the cable coming through the wall socket straight into the 7800DXL ?

Try this,
1. Unplug the HH5 from the 7800DXL
2. Restart the 7800DXL
3. Once restarted plug your PC to 7800DXL
4. Login to the 7800DXL
5. Click on 'Configuration >> WAN >> WAN Service'
6. Delete the default PPPOA WAN service
7. Click on 'Add'
8. Change the 'WAN Port' to 'Ethernet'
9. Change the 'Type' to 'IP Over Ethenet'
10. Make sure 'Obtain an IP address automatically' is ticked
11. Click on 'Next'
12. Select the 'eth0.1' interface under 'Available Routed WAN Interfaces' and click on the arrow pointing left so it should now be listed under 'Selected Default Gateway Interfaces'
13. Do the same for 'Available WAN Interfaces' (listed below) so it should now be listed under 'Selected DNS Server Interfaces'
14. Click on 'Next'
15. Now connect your HH5 to the EWAN port on the 7800DXL

Re: Setting up 7800dxl with BT Infinity
Hi, Tried everything you suggested and still cannot get into the billion admin page, its so strange, no matter what i try i just can't see the login page using ethernet cable from laptop to powered up 7800DXL and the HH5 completely disconnected from the 7800DXL
Internet is connected through a USB stick in the laptop and Norton disabled just in case.
I am considering the 8800NL to replace the 7800DXL as i prefer to have a plug & play solution which appears to be the case with the 8800NL, - in any case i am not sure what benefits i would see even if i could connect the 7800 to the HH5 ?
I am a little disappointed mind, considering the 7800DXL is only 8 months old

Try disconnecting your 3G dongle from your PC, and then reboot the PC and reset the 7800DXL, once done you should be able to login using the default IP address http://192.168.1.254.Trafford lad wrote:Hi, Tried everything you suggested and still cannot get into the billion admin page, its so strange, no matter what i try i just can't see the login page using ethernet cable from laptop to powered up 7800DXL and the HH5 completely disconnected from the 7800DXL

Also do a ipconfig in command prompt to ensure you get the correct IP address from the router eg 192.168.1.100

Re: Setting up 7800dxl with BT Infinity
When you connect a PC the 7800DXL, it will issue you with a IP address, as the DHCP server is on by default,Trafford lad wrote:it isn't getting an IP address from the DXL because i can't connect to the DXL in any way unfortunatley
If the router fails to give your computer a IP address, your computer will assign it self a IP address eg 169.xxx.xxx.xxx.
So once you reset the 7800DXL using the reset pin hole, (hold the reset pin hole in for 10 seconds) the DHCP server will be on, and should issue your computer a IP address.
If that fails try and set a static IP address to your LAN card, listed below, then attempt to login to the device using http://192.168.1.254
IP address - 192.168.1.200
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.1.254
Primary DNS server - 8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS Server - 8.8.4.4
