I may be way off the mark, but don't you need to add the MAC address of the Alfa adapter in the WDS service on the 7800N?
Advanced > Configuration > Wireless > Enable WDS Service
and then add the router MAC address to the Alfa

Hi i really do not know and thats why i am here to find the answer lol, but seeing as i didnt have to put anything in this setting when using the laptops own wifi i can not see the need to enter anything for the GSKY (same as Alfa), i really do not know, is it usual to add to these settings when changing to a different adapter.

No you don't need to add WDS, this is for a wireless link between another AP or router.
Are all other devices working fine with security?? eg phones, tablets etc??

just put 7800n back on and yes mobiles and ipad working fine through it.

and now the GSKY adapter just shown up as working great, thanks guys for taking the time to try and help.
