My brain is overloading

At the moment on the 7800n i have the PPTP option enabled and the IP Addresses Assigned to Peer i have set to 192.168.1.150 This is the address that a device will be given i.e my laptop when a vpn connection has been confirmed. I understand that part. I have created the PPTP account on the router and then setup a PPTP connection on my windows 7 laptop using the credentials used in the PPTP account setup on the 7800n. When i dialled in to the 7800n from my laptop which was connected via my iphone it appeared to connect fine. I checked out whatsmyip and it gave me my home external ip which was right so i now knew i was on my home network. The only change i had to make was manually inputting DNS into the vpn connection as the 7800n appears to not pass this over like you mentioned

When i browsed the internet on my laptop i take it everything was going through the vpn so it was safe and secure so to speak? If so im happy in the fact i know i can always vpn to the 7800n when im out and about using public wifi and browse the web through the 7800n safe and secure.

I was just getting myself in a muddle thats all doh! Just wanted to make sure i have everything setup correctly. Is there anything you would recommend to use for a home vpn solution so i can browse the web from my home lan more securely?

Your setup is fine, for dialing into your PPTP server from a remote location eg internet cafe/hotel etc.

For secure browsing from home, you can try out VyprVPN from a company called Giganews, they are fast when I used to use there newservers (haven't tried there VPN software) but from the news servers speeds they are excellent.

But I personally think this is a over kill, just make sure you have all normal security software installed eg antivirus, malwarebytes etc and you should be fine.

The only reason people use VPN to route traffic is if they want to hide data they are transmitting/receiving or if they are using a unsecure networks eg hotels, internet cafe etc

Do you think that Billion will fix the issue with the 7800n not passing DNS onto VPN connections from an iphone? I can connected to the vpn fine on my iphone and browse to my router by logging into it with the local IP address to wake other machines on my lan but there is no way to access the web on the phone with the vpn on

Try and disbale "send all traffic" on your iphones VPN connection.

I don't think our engineers can impement DNS passthrough on the 7800N (the new Bipac 7800VDOX can do this)

Thanks billion fan i will take a look at that and give it a try. Will that then not route the traffic through the vpn tunnel though as you turning it off?
May look at one of the new routers as well and treat myself

Yes thats right when you disable send all traffic, the traffic is not routed through your router WAN IP.

You only have two choices,

1. Disable send all traffic when you want to browse
2. Disable the VPN tunnel once you have woke your PC up.
