Poor Wifi Range with my 7800N

Post by bathingape »

Hey,

I've had my Billion Bipac 7800N for about a year and a half now and to be honest I've always experienced poor wifi signal but due to me working away, i've not had the time to investigate this. Yesterday I upgraded the firmware to 1.06h and i'm still having difficulties with it. The signal, which i'm measuring using Wifi Analyser on Android, is obviously strongest when right in front of the router. (Netstumbler isnt compatible with my laptop wifi adapter).

The router sits on the bottom shelf of a table in the hallway which has a cordless phone on the top shelf. If I go to any other room in the house, the signal drops dramatically. Distance wise, in a straight line, I'd say for me to receive poor signal it's like only 3 metres. Wifi connects and disconnects if i'm in the furthest away room (5-6m). This is strange as I thought the Wireless N would have provided me an amazing signal. I've also seen posts on other forums with people saying that their signal is so strong that they have to reduce it. I've tried changing the channels, and encryption is set to WPA2 AES. I'm thinking the next step is to get stronger antennas?

The first screenshot below is when I'm in my room which walks out on to the hall, and is about 3 metres. The second is when i'm literally right in front of the router.

Just to add, it's transmitting at 20/40MHz and Wireless g+n only.

Try changing the channel width to 20mhz.

Yes it will, but it might improve the range

Have you tried changing channel, and also move the router to top shelf so nothing is blocking the antenna.

Still the same unfortunately. Is anyone able to recommend me some more powerful antennas in the UK?
