7800N on BT Infinity 2 - slow wifi

Post by patrick0 »

I used my 7800N on O2 (now Sky) for the past few years. I've now moved to BT Infinity 2 which comes with a VDSL modem and the BT Homehub 4. The HH4 only has one 1Gbit ethernet and 3x100Mbit, so I would like to use the 7800N.

I was able to connect the 7800N to the VDSL modem via the EWAN socket. The problem is that I'm only getting (2 metres away, line of sight) 45-50Mbps on wifi whereas if I switch back to the HH4 I get 60-65Mbps (via the HH4 5GHz wifi network). These speeds are with the Speedtest app on an iPhone 5. I've tried switching between the 20 & 20/40 band settings on the 7800N without any noticeable difference. I'm not sure what version my 7800N firmware is one, but I did update it sometime last year.

Does anyone have any suggestions or is the 7800N's wifi limited in speed - would one of the newer models do better?

Try changing the wireless channel the router outputs on. (Default is 1, try 6 or 9)

Also make sure you are using WPA2 with AES for your security mode.

Leave the channel width on 20/40mhz

I think its the 7800N restricting the speed - exactly the same here

I have tried various channels etc. to no joy - Think it might be time to upgrade to one of the newer fibre modem/router combinations ;)
