7800N FTTC Speeds

Post by craiga79 »

Just upgraded from 40/2 to 80/20 on Talktalk.

7800N is maxing out at 38meg download if wired or wireless. PC cabled direct into openreach router is giving 55meg down.

Tried qos off and on. Off gives 38meg down, on gives 32 meg down.

Have wiped the 7800n, also tried firmware f,g and h. Nothing improves the 38meg down. Speedtest shows the download as flat as an iron board, i.e. it looks as if the router is capping it, whereas on the openreach modem it peaks and drops a little as you would normally expect.

Ping jumps from about 15ms to 35ms between modem and router also.

Help...........where is my 17meg going and why is the router adding 20ms!

Have you got anything else configured on the device eg URL Filter?? Also have you tried a different Ethernet cable in between the 7800N and the open reach modem?

Nothing else is configured on the device as it was started on factory settings when i tried the older firmware. Yes, I did try replacing the ethernet cable and it made no difference.

I have stumbled across a post on the BT Infinity forum where the same thing has happened to someone and they have suggested the fix is to manual export the settings and increase a qos cap (in notepad) from 38000 to 80000 (even if qos is switched off). I will try this tonight and see if it works. I have never seem such flat and precise speedtest results before as it is clearly capped at 38meg. Its the first time I have had results at 37.99, 38.00, 38.01, 38.00 etc etc.

Let me know how you get on with the edited config file.

Just wondering if this would work for ADSL2+ but can't see where I would alter any QoS settings.

I know I can tweak the SNRM but prefer to stay with the 6dB profile for stability.

This is an older config as I now use ISP set DNS servers.

If you are using ADSL, then there is no effect, as ADSL ADSL2 ADSL 2+ won't reach anywhere near 38 meg, the 38meg is the QOS base limit for a EWAN connection

Thanks billion_fan - that will save me from experimenting :)

Was that the setting I would have otherwise altered as marked out in the config ?

Yep looks like it (we don't normally comment on editing config files, as we only support whats within the web gui)

It will be interesting to see how craiga79 gets on.

There was obviously some brave soul out there to come up with that fix :)

Unfortunately no change to report.

Have broken out the talktalk supplies router. Its giving 55meg out of the box so proves the 7800N is capping for no reason.

I dont want to have to go back to poor wifi and constant resets with the talktalk supplied rubbish, so how can I get my 7800n to work at the correct speed. I'll raise a ticket.
