8800axl WiFi issues

Hi
I recently replaced my 7800n router with a 8800axl router when i upgraded to sky fibre. I am happy with the 8800axl except for some issues i am experiancing with the wifi.
I have a number of tablets, laptops, ipods and phones that connect to my wifi, i can't explain the following and would like some advice / help.
When i do speed test connections from my laptop i get 33/9 speeds, which i am happy with given i have a 40/10 line. i get the same on my ipad air, however, on my phones (iphone 5s) and other tablets (nexus 7 2013) i get something like 5/9 speeds.
These test results are taken using the same servers on speedtest, and sitting in the same place in my lounge (my router is situated upstairs in my study).
As you can see the wifi speed and coverage in itself seem fine, and i get much better speeds when i am nearer my router. But i can't understand why difference devices used in the same place offer such a wide variance in speed.
I have read in a few places (here and on an australian site - whirlpool) that the wifi on this unit is a little flakey, but i am convinced i have something not confirgured quite correctly.
I can supply settings and other information to try and resolve my issue.
I am running the firmware 232d.dm12. I can't locate any firmware at all on the www.billion.uk.comn site for this router, so i don't even know how widely support this router is in the uk.
I am currently only running the 2.4ghz wifi in order to trouble shoot this issue, once i have fixed this i would also like to activate the 5ghz for my apple devices.
