8800NL newbie

Post by oldjack »

I will have my 8800NL in the next couple of days. I will have to setup as ADSL until I am switched over to FTTC in about a week's time. How easy is it to switch from ADSL to VDSL?

I think with the default settings you have to do nothing for the switchover - assuming you don't have to change provider.

Rebooting it should do the trick.

Oldjack,

I too have had similar thoughts. I've had my 8800NL for around six months now, using it in ADSL mode, with wired rather than wireless connections to it. But eventually I hope to use it in wireless mode and with VDSL.

What's not clear to me is where the dividing line between modem and router function lies (aside from the obvious, externally-viewable connections on the 8800). That's to say, if I were to switch to using the 8800NL as a combined VDSL modem/router, what would I have to do with all my router settings, given that my 8800 serves two machines and a networked printer, all using fixed IP addresses? Anything at all? Presumably, I could leave the setup as a wired one, but apart from entering and changing a few modem-specific settings, what other settings would need to be changed? Would I need to delete all existing router settings and then reinstall them?

I've also wondered about the logistics of the actual ADSL-to-VDSL changeover. In all probability, an Openreach engineer would call, expecting to fit and set up an Huawei VDSL modem. He or she would be expecting me to connect a pre-configured PPPoE router (and in all probability would not be too impressed if it didn't work). So, at that stage, could I leave my existing router settings as they are - apart from changing from PPPoA to PPPoE - and just make the required external cable-change? And then what needs to be done when the engineer has departed, in order to remove the Huawei modem and replace it by the 8800's built-in VDSL modem?

I've a niggling suspicion that although all of this looks straightforward in practise there might well be some hiccups, especially if it's not just a single machine that's being connected to the router and fixed IP addressing is being used. This is probably one of those occasions when knowing and understanding the procedures is important and where therefore due preparation is all-important.

What's needed is for some kind, knowledgeable soul, with hands-on experience of doing this very thing, to write a well though-out, numbered list of actions.

All you have to do is configure the PTM PPPOE interface with your ISP broadband username and password (Found under 'Configuration >> WAN >> WAN Service', everything else can stay the same eg LAN settings/wireless settings etc.

Once configured and your line is upgraded, it should automatically pick up VDSL connection, and then authenticate with your username and password, set within the PTM interface

Thanks to everyone for their advice,It looks straightforward but you never know. By the way anybody suffering from the wireless problem of not getting the 40Mhz bandwidth see my posting titled Dissapointed for the solution.
