7800N download speed has fallen 50%

Post by rbradbury »

Been happily running at ~16Mbps download on TalkTalk Business for a year with firmware 1.06b. Changed to PlusNet when our local exchange was upgraded by BT and 20Mbps ADSL2+ became available. For the first month, ~17Mbps download reliably seen. This dropped to ~8Mbps for no apparent reason. No changes to PC / network / applications etc.

After a lot of work with PlusNet support, they sent a replacement 'Technicolor' TG582n router. Connected up and this immediately delivers 18.2 Mbps upload! I then upgraded 7800N firmware from 1.06b to 1.06g with no discernible change in wired performance.

Speeds measured by speedtest.net using same server.

To rub more salt into my wounds, at face value it appears that a compact box with no external antennae can also deliver a solid wireless 10Mbps connection where the Billion manages 2Mbps

Anyone want to buy a redundant 7800N? Or can anyone suggest a way to improve its performance?

I suggest you contact our support for it if your are getting this speed difference as much as 50% so we can investigate it.

As suggested by tinytim, it is important for your to provide the line stats e.g. sync speed, SNR, line attenuation..etc.

We have a 12Mbps testing line with Plusnet but on many occasion where it drops down to around 7Mbps ans stayed. It will go back up to 12MBps after calling Plusnet and what we found out is because we keep unplugging the line (for testing) the BT BRAS server reset our profile back to ADSL and it was only after many calls that they attempt to fixed the profile for us and that did the trick for a while.
