7800n Serious sync speed problem

First post here
I use ADSL Max upto 8Meg, and have been happily syncing at between 4800K & 5000K Down on my 2wire router. I have just recently purchased a 7800n & connected it up today, now my sync speed is 192k Down. I am assuming that a setting is in some way responsible, but I have no idea where to start looking. I'm using the PPPoA (RFC2364, PPP over AAL5) protocol. Authentication protocol is set to auto.

I don't know what other information to include, but I am so stressed about this, please help if you can. Could it be a faulty router? It is brand new, but who knows, could still be a duff one.

Hi

Please post your ADSL status page so we can check your SNR downstream, and see if we can tweak your settings to improve your downstream speeds.

You can find your ADSL status page by following these steps.

1. Login to the router web configuration page on http://192.168.1.254
2. Use the username 'admin' and password 'admin' to login
3. Click on 'Advanced'
4. Click on 'Status'
5. Click on 'ADSL status'
6. Take a screen capture of the this page and post it here (use the print screen button on your keyboard and paste in paint)

I will have to wait until late tonight to post the stats, because as soon as I plug the 7800n into the filter, it connects at 192Kbps, then thats my rate stuck at that for hours after that, even after plugging my 2wire back in which immediately syncs at over 4000kbps But unfortunately, still has terrible 16k speed.

I tried connecting it last night, it connected at 160Kbps I looked over the settings, all looked fine SNR was normal as far as I could see, but net was damn near unusable, as soon as I plugged my 2wire back in, sync was 4768kbps but had to wait for the dslam to allow my connection to get back up to speed wich took just over 7 hours

On the box it says ADSL backwards compatible, I'm on ADSL, not ADSL2 or ADSL2+, just ADSL (DSLMAX). Is there a significant setting that would/could make the difference? I did make sure that the ADSL connection was G. DMT which my other router indicates it is set to. (Although to be honest I tried ALL the ADSL setting types independantly just to be doubly sure).

If you are on ADSL, then G.DMT is the best setting for you.

Well, I did it, I put the 7800n back on, and yes, same again, back to being locked at 160kbps again I decided since I was there anyway, I would tweak the snr a bit, so I started at 50, and went down in increments of 5, right back to -1. The best sync I got was 640Kbps. Here is a capture of the stats at 1.

What firmware version are on?

Very strange, never seen this before.

Are you plugged up directly to the main telephone socket? or are you using a extension?

Also who is your ISP?

I'm with http://www.ruralinternet.co.uk/,
Connected directly to master socket through filter, even changed the filter to eliminate that.
I first was using 7800nv6_1.06f.dc1 firmware, today I upgraded it to 7800nv6_1.06g just in case that was an issue, but there was no difference in either.
Now my 2wire is plugged back in, these are the stats from it, although I am still stuck with download speed of 15-16k and very slow loading web pages, until a few hours have passed (hopefully)
These stats are what I get as standard, no tweaks, not a superduper router, but one of the best for long lines (as is the 7800n I thought)

The significant difference between the two is the downstream attenuation.

With the 2wire it's 46.8dB , but with the Billion it's 63.5dB. That'll go a long way to explain the speed difference I'd guess.

What's the cause , well I've no idea.

I'm only 2.66 km from the exchange, does it seem likely that it's faulty hardware? It's a brand spanking new 7800n, from play.com.
