Idiots Guide to using 7800N PPTP Server

Post by johnandally »

Hi there.
I suspect what I'm asking is very simple but normally I'm able to test stuff by repeated trial and error, whereas for the PPTP server I can only test from outside the network so need to get it right straight away to avoid repeated visits to an internet cafe!

Please could anyone give step by step instructions to achieve the following:

I'd like to use a remote windows xp machine as VPN client to access a PC on my internal home network and see the shares on that home PC as if they were any other network share (eg copy files between as you would normally on the internal network at home)

I've managed to make the remote connection to the 7800N after setting up the VPN server and assigning 192.168.1.200 to the Peer (i.e. remote xp machine). I can't then access the internal network PC. I think I need to do some port forwarding.

Is it a simple matter of forwarding port 1723 to the ip of the machine on the internal network? I've seen something about protocol GRE47. Do I need to forward GRE on the port mapping page too?

Many thanks

Hi johnandally

Are you planning on using the 7800N as the VPN server or a computer on your network as the VPN server?

I have attached screen shot of what you setup should look like on the 7800N if you are planning on using the 7800N as a VPN server.

Once you have setup the client, the client will need a IP address to connect to and a username and password for authentication, which is shown on the screen capture called PPTP account setup.

I have also attached a screen capture of where you can find your IP address, so you can enter this in your client from a remote connection.

I hope this helps :D

Hi johnandally

I forgot to add, once you have established a VPN connection, please try and access your home computer internal IP address for example 192.168.1.102, as you should now be inside the internal network with a internal IP address assigned from the billion router

You will have to put two back slashes '\\' in your explorer page as shown in the screen shot below. (not internet explorer)

Many thanks billion_fan

That was fantastic - really appreciate your help.

I'll hopefully try it from outside my network in the next few days to check it's worked.

Thanks again

i managed to get the VPN working fine, nice one ...
I can access all locations on the LAN so that part works,

except one issue.

When i'm connected via the VPN and i try to access a website, its wont resolve any website and just kicks up DNS errors.

I couldnt see a setting for VPN and DNS, maybe i'm missing something?

i have both,

found a solution from another thread on here. On my jailbroken iPhone installed guizmDNS and it allowed me to change DNS settings to google public DNS and now i can connect to the VPN and access local shares and internet access at the same time. Can toggle this on and off for when i use the VPN.

On the laptop i cant remember if the DNS issues are there, but if they are i can just manually change the DNS settings, im sure...

Would be nice if Billion would make a firmware update to give the VPN client DNS settings from the router.

But i guess they dont so they can sell more routers ....

Hi there,

Thanks for the guide...however...I am not having any joy with this at all. I am trying to remotely connect to our office network via our BiPac 7800N to that I can browse the files on our WindowsXP based company file server.

I have set everything as per your guide, and I just get "Authentication Failed" every time I try and establish the connection on my iPad, and "Error 812 - The connection was prevented because of a policy configured on your RAS/VPN server. Specifically, the authentication method used by the server to verify your username and password may not match the authentication method configured in your connection profile. Please contact the Administrator of the RAS server and notify them of this error. when I try from a PC.

In Config -> VPN -> PPTP - We have a static IP address...I know what this is. I have enabled PPTP and set the "IP Addresses Assigned to Peer" to the start of a range of IP addresses that are known to be free. Auth. Type = MS-CHAPv2
In Config -> VPN -> PPTP Account - I have setup a Username & Password, Tunnel Enable, Connection type "Remote Access"
In Config -> VPN -> PPTP Client - I have setup a Username & Password (Same as above), Auth Type. MS-CHAPv2, PPTP Server Address (Tryed External IP, Internal IP of Router, Internal IP of file Server), Connectcion Type Remote Access.

On the Client (iPad & PC) I have set our external IP as VPN server address, Set to PPTP, and entered username & password.

I just get Autherisation Failed messages. I am using the iPad via a Access Point from mt iPhone on 3G network...so I can test not using the same internet connection (external IP).

I have tried setting up the Firewall on the router to accept incoming & outgoing connections on External Port 1723 (TCP & UDP).
I have done the port mapping setting the 1723 port to forward to the internal IP address of our File server.

I just cant figure out what I am doing wrong and why this will not work...can anyone give me a couple pointers? I've spent several hours on this...and getting rather fed up! :?

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!!

Do you already have a PPTP server hosted on your works server??

If you disconnect all devices from the network (after work hours) and restart the router (after you have saved your PPTP setup to the config) then attempt to dial into the PPTP server onboard the 7800N it should work.

You can connect to the PPTP server using your iPhone Firmware (5.1.1)

I hope this helps
