21CN / ADSL2+

Post by Dave Prince »

Rumour has it that my exchange is upgrading to 21CN (maybe even has already.) :D

I have a 7800N (running 1.06g.) Do I have to reconfigure anything to take advantage of this, or maybe just reboot? Also, where would I see the new status reported on the modem's control pages?

Thanks,

Dave.

Depends who your ISP is really.

Just because BT is upgrading the equipment doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be affected.

I'm with Plusnet, and they do claim to support 21CN speeds.

Well they're part of BT and use BTs' profiling system.

If they switch you over to 21CN then they'll obviously advise you of that fact & I think the switch would be pretty seamless in that the router would just do a re-sync at some point and reconnect at hopefully better speeds.

I'd give them a call to see what their plans are personally.

You can check under (Advanced >> Status >>> ADSL Status) here you can check your downstream and upstream sync speeds, for any improvements (speeds may vary depending on distance from the exchange)

If you don't see any change on your ADSL status page, you can try and drop your ADSL sync or reboot the router and see if there is any improvements then.

The router should be able to auto sync at ADSL2 and ADSL2+ speeds, this is the default setting.

Thanks

Plusnet are quite good at changing people over to 21cn
Whenever your exchange is updated, just open a support ticket asking to be changed over and they should be able to do it within 5 days...

I was already on the 21cn when I got my 7800N, but didn't have to make any specific changes in order to get it working...

Thank for the help guys. I did get an improvement in throughput yesterday (~3Mb->~4Mb) but I suspect that was payback for some fiddling I did with the SNR hack a day or two before.

I worked out where plusnet list your current exchange status. For mine it says BT are still planning to upgrade it, but it gives the expected date as last spring! So something's not up to date there. I'll open a ticket and ask directly.

There can sometimes be some conflicting information out there... Usually the best way to find if ADSL2/ADSL2+ is available on your line would be to use the BT broadband availability checker;

I wouldn't hold your breath for a massive improvement if you're getting 3-4 Mb currently, though...
