7800N + Dell 1390 problems

Post by pkd_81 »

Hello

I recently purchased a 7800N, and while the speeds I'm getting over wifi to my MacBook have been as expected, an older Dell notebook I have (Inspiron 1720) running Windows 7 SP1 and a Dell 1390 wifi card has been rendered nearly useless due to the slow speeds. Earlier this evening I was getting about 0.06 Mbps on the Dell via speedtest.net while the Macbook was reporting 10-11 Mbps.

There does not appear to be a Windows 7 specific driver for the 1390. The driver which was installed when Windows 7 was installed is dated 2008, while the newest on the Dell site is 2007.

Any ideas?

This link http://www.downloadatoz.com/howto/focus ... 78039.html has drivers for the 1390 (17th down on the list) and although it gives a date of Sept 2010 for that link, I don't know if that applies to the actual drivers.

According to the notes under the actual link on the google search, they're WHQL so if you first create a restore point, you could check them out to see if there's any improvement or if they're any newer than what you already have.

Were the speeds comparable with the MacBook with your previous router and if so, have you swapped back (if you still have it and it's still working) to see if that's still the case.

It may also be worth running a full scan with the free version of Malwarebytes as infections can slow BB down http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ and does the Dell have a N or a G NIC fitted and was your previous router a N or a G ?

Have you run any speed tests on the Dell in Safe Mode with Networking as it could be progs/Startup items if you've downloaded anything onto it recently.

Don't know if you have the Dell set to auto clear the cache when you close the browser, but from Start type %temp% > Enter > CTRL+A > SHIFT+DELETE then tick the box to Skip the rest, will clear any build up of temp files.
