Setting a higher noise margin.

Post by alsoknownas »

I've got a troublesome line that has a very large day/night noise margin variation. I think it's due to my 900 feet ASL hilltop location with a longish dropwire.
I don't think it's down to crosstalk but more to do with medium wave radio reception which is very strong at night with Asian stations blasting out at high volume.
I've just bought a Bipac 7800N router and set in normal ADSL2+ mode I get 6 dB in the day falling to 0 dB and below at night. Most nights it drops sync several times and my line is now capped at 6655 kb/s on a 45 dB attenuation.
I've tried setting PhyR and this helps by keeping the night-time NM above 1.5 dB most nights.
However I have noticed that the NM is only returning to around 4.5 dB during the day and the mean seems to be slowly dropping over time.
I would like to know if it is possible to set the target NM to a higher figure, say 7 or 8 dB in order to make the line more stable.
Perhaps I should give up on ADSL2+ altogether and set the router to ADSL2 mode only which seems to be a lot more stable.
Any thoughts anyone.

try the following

Login to the routers web configuration on http://192.168.1.254

Now click on the following link http://192.168.1.254/snr.html

Set the SNR to 150 and click on 'Apply'

Now monitor the issue.

Thank you for that advice.
I eventually settled for a figure of 125 which gave me an initial setting of 7.5 noise margin.
Fingers crossed it's staying connected at the moment with minimum excursions no lower than around 1.5 dB.
It's wonderful to have a router so adaptable. :D
Regards.
